Boxy Boxes
Boxes are my first love in woodworking. As my skills and abilities progress I hope to think more and more "outside-the-box", so to speak, with my box designs. The possibilities for unique designs are staggering, truly limited only by the scope of the imagination.
I hope you enjoy my efforts up to this point. Thanks for looking!
Spalted Oak Men's Valet
Spalted Oak Men's Valet
You never know what you will find in the trash. This absolutely stunning piece of spalted oak was in the throw away pile at a local saw mill. It was too small for them to sell so I got it for free. To think that God brings such beauty by using a fungus to affect the wood in this way!
One man's trash is most definitely another man's treasure!
The legs are made out of salvaged black walnut and the interior is lined with leather. This unique piece is one piece I am definitely keeping for myself!

Reclaimed Oak Box
Oak Crotchwood Box with Sliding Lid
This box was made as a gift and my wife was very sad to see it go. It is one of her favorite pieces that I have made. The sides are made of oak crotch wood. Crotch wood is formed where two branches of a tree come together or where a branch joins the trunk of the tree. It is also called "feathered" or "plumed" because of the gorgeous figure it forms in the wood.
The ends of the box and the sliding lid are made from black walnut. The closure/clasp is made of leather. It is finished with several coats of lacquer.

Small Oak Lift-Lid Box
This small box is made of red oak with a cherry lid and accents. The box was first finished with a dark stain that was subsequently sanded off to give the “tiger stripe” look to the box. The cherry accents at the mitered corners are called “keys” and in addition to giving the box a distinct look they also serve to reinforce the mitered corners to make sure this box will be around for many years to come for you to use and enjoy. The box is finished with Danish oil and rubbed wax.

Rainbow Poplar Keepsake Box
This box is made from rainbow poplar. Rainbow poplar is not a particular species of poplar. It is yellow poplar that has been mineral stained while it was growing. Although the reasons for this particular effect on the wood are not fully understood, the results make for a very unique appearance that can’t be duplicated apart from nature. The lid is made from a reclaimed piece of rich black walnut and is attached with a leather hinge. The box is finished with Danish oil and rubbed wax.

Medium Keepsake Box
Small Poplar Lift-Lid Box
This small box is made from yellow poplar with salvaged black walnut accents and lid. When I found the black walnut it was so hidden under decades of dirt and grime that I had no idea of the incredible piece I had stumbled upon. When I planed it down to the fresh surface I was blown away by the beauty of the wood. It is the richest black walnut I have ever handled or worked with. The picture really doesn't do it justice. The accents at the mitered corners are called “keys” and in addition to giving the box a distinct look they also serve to reinforce the mitered corners to make sure this box will be around for many years to come for you to use and enjoy. The box is finished with Danish oil and rubbed with wax.

Ambrosia Curly Maple Keepsake Box
This box is made from wood that not too long ago would have discarded and burnt as defective. It is made of Ambrosia curly maple. Both the Ambrosia and the chatoyant (rolling bands of light) curl are considered defects. Dendrologists (tree scientists) still aren't certain exactly what causes the chatoyance of the curly maple, but we are certain of its irridescent beauty. The Ambrosia, the streaks of blue and black, is caused by the Ambrosia beetle that burrows into the wood and introduces a particular fungus that causes the unique discoloration of the wood. They may be considered defects but I consider them to be God's way of enhancing the already incredible beauty of the wood. The lid is attached with a leather hinge that also acts as a clasp at the front of the box. The box is finished with Danish oil.
Dimensions: 6”W x 4”D x 3½”H
SOLD
Pallet Wood Tool Box
This is a replica of an actual tool box I found. The original was quite a bit longer than this long. I can't imagine how heavy it must have been when loaded with tools. This one is made from reclaimed wood from a pallet. The rope handle was soaked in "Sunbleach" stain and then rolled around in the garden to work dirt into it to give it an aged appearance. I did not put any type of finish on the box so that the aged patina of the wood would not be altered.
Dimensions: 18”L x 6”D x 8"H
SOLD
This box is made from walnut. The corner joints are reinforced with walnut dowels. The split lid is made from walnut and an incredibly figured maple burl. The picture cannot even come close to showcasing the chatoyance of the burl. Burls are the large ugly knots you sometimes see on trees. It is proof that inner beauty really is more important than outward appearance. The split lid swivels on two aluminum rods. It is finished with Danish oil and rubbed with wax.

Poplar Keepsake Box
This is one of my favorite boxes. I actually have very few of my own boxes, but I made and kept one of these for myself. It is made from a very rich walnut. I wanted to experiment with some texture so rather than using solid wood for the keys in the mitered corners I used plywood. The top of the box is inlaid with a mosaic of ceramic tile and the inside is lined with a beautiful, warm cherry. It is finished with Danish oil and rubbed wax. Dimensions: 6"L x 2 3/4"H x 4"D

Walnut Keepsake Box
Reclaimed Barn Beam Candle Box
